Acclaimed Nashville singer-songwriter Jason Isbell and his longtime band The 400 Unit will return with their eighth album, "Weathervanes," on June 9.

The 13-track collection was recorded at Nashville's Blackbird Studio and was produced by Isbell — it's his first self-produced album of original material since 2011's "Here We Rest."

“There is something about boundaries on this record,” Isbell says in a press release.

“As you mature, you still attempt to keep the ability to love somebody fully and completely while you’re growing into an adult and learning how to love yourself.”

That theme is clearly present on the album's first released track, "Death Wish," which hit digital services Tuesday and is described as a song about "being in love with someone suffering from depression."

"Did you ever love a woman with a death wish," Isbell belts over minor-key acoustic picking and mournful strings.

"Something in her eyes like flipping off a light switch/ Everybody dies, but you gotta find a reason to carry on."

"Weathervanes" is Isbell and the 400 Unit's first original collection since 2020's "Reunions," which was completed just ahead of the pandemic.

In 2021, they released the covers collection "Georgia Blue" — born out of a pledge Isbell made to record an album of songs by Georgia artists if Joe Biden won the state in the 2020 election.

The band has also announced an extensive North American tour, kicking off March 1 in Calgary and running through mid-August. No Nashville dates have been announced, but Isbell has made it a near-annual tradition to hold a week-long (or so) residency at the Ryman Auditorium in the fall.
