Jason Momoa apologizes for taking photos in Sistine Chapel after online backlash

Yesterday, a shirtless and sweaty Jason Momoa, 42, took to Instagram to apologize for taking photos in the Sistine Chapel while in Italy.
In what appeared to be the middle or end of a workout session, the “Aquaman” star explained in a video that he meant no disrespect by taking photos and videos of the iconic Apostolic Palace chapel, which is usually forbidden.
“I found people really wanted to take photos with me,” said Momoa. “I was very respectful and I asked for permission for what I thought would be OK. I would never want to do anything to disrespect someone’s culture. So if I did, I apologize.”
A week ago, Momoa had posted a series of pictures and videos of him and crew members visiting the Sistine Chapel. They were in Rome shooting the upcoming film “Fast X,” the latest installment in the “Fast & Furious” franchise.

In his apology, the actor detailed that he had given a “donation” so that his friends and crew members could enjoy a tour of Rome with him on their day off from shooting.
With the caption “I LOVE YOU ITALY,” in all caps, the actor posted several pictures of himself with others, and videos of a view from one of the UNESCO World Heritage Site’s balconies.

Users were quick to point out that taking photos and videos is typically prohibited in the chapel, and several attributed Momoa’s celebrity status to why he was able to bypass the rule.
“We can’t take pics but [of course] celebrities can,” one fan wrote with a frowny face emoji. “Nothing against Jason (I adore him) but it’s not fair.”
Another person commented, “Omg of course they let you take pictures (I thought it wasn’t allowed for preservation purposes).”
Others were more upset, using red angry face emojis along with their comments.
“You cannot touch any of our masterpieces!!!” one posted, alongside three angry face emojis.
“Fast X” is set to be released in May 2023 and stars Vin Diesel, Charlize Theron, Sung Kang and John Cena, in addition to Momoa.
