MALVERN — Jason Powers has resigned as Malvern High School's girls basketball coach after six seasons.

Powers won 66 games with the Hornets. He was named East District Coach of the Year in 2018 when Malvern finished 20-6. He also was selected District 5 Coach of the Year twice.

Under Powers, the Hornets went from a one-win season in 2019 to winning seasons in 2021 and 2023.

“While I will miss the competition, the timing makes sense personally and professionally," Powers said in a statement. "I will be able to focus on my family and other opportunities.  I am very proud of the strides we’ve made over the past several years.

“I am fortunate that I was able to coach two All-Ohio first-teamers during my tenure and coach with some of the best assistant coaches in the state.  Reflecting on the years, my greatest compliments always mentioned how much I got from my girls.  Finally, I’d like to thank my supporters over the years.”

The first-team All-Ohio players Powers coached are Kelsi Hulit and his daughter Maddie, a first-teamer this past season.

Powers plans to remain in his role as a physical education teacher, health teacher and tutor at Malvern.

“We greatly appreciate all of the dedication and commitment from Coach Powers over the past six seasons.” Malvern athletic director Dave Tucci said. “Jason put his heart and soul into the program and enjoyed some very successful seasons.”

The search for a new head coach is underway. Interested candidates should send a cover letter and resume to Tucci at tuccida@brownlocalschools.com by April 15.
