Jasper County voters want Grassley, Kniff McCulla, Franken

Jun. 8—Voters in Jasper County voted overwhelmingly in favor of Michael Franken to take on Chuck Grassley, who, in turn, was local Republicans' first choice in the race for U.S Senate, early voting results show. Though one of the closest primary elections in the county was the race for the GOP nominee for House District 37.

The primary between State Rep. Jon Thorup and opponent Barb Kniff McCulla was settled by a mere 20 votes in Jasper County. Out of a total of 557 votes, Kniff McCulla received the most with 288, or 51.7 percent. Thorup received 268 votes, or 48.11 percent. The one remaining vote was a write-in.

Meanwhile, in the primary race for U.S. Senate between Grassley and State Sen. Jim Carlin, Jasper County voters gave Grassley 2,094 votes out of a total 2,766, meaning the longtime lawmaker got 75.7 percent of the vote. Carlin was able to get 667 votes out of Jasper County, or 24.11 percent.

On the other side of aisle, Democratic voters in Jasper County chose Franken over Abby Finkenauer and Glenn Hurst. Out of the 1,913 votes cast, Franken received 1,228 votes, or 64.19 percent. Finkenauer received 617 votes, or 32.25 percent. Hurst garnered 66 votes, or 3.45 percent.

Other contested primary election results in Jasper County include:

—STATE AUDITOR, REPUBLICAN NOMINEE: Out of a total 2,355 votes, Todd Halbur received 1,221 votes over Mary Ann Hanusa, who received 1,130 votes.

—SECRETARY OF STATE, DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE: Out of a total 1,715 votes, Joel Miller received 1,227 votes, while Eric Van Lancker received 486.
