Jay teenager charged with second-degree murder in shooting Saturday

A 16-year-old from Jay was charged with second-degree murder Saturday, according to a statement by the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office.

Jaden Simmons allegedly shot and killed 43-year-old Jonathan Simmons. A motive for the shooting has not been released at this time.

The shooting occurred at about 12:20 p.m. Saturday at 3487 Highway 4 in Jay.

Simmons' arrest report is heavily redacted but provides a few details as to the circumstances of the shooting.

The arrest report indicates a witness said Jaden and Jonathan had been arguing in the home's living room. Jaden reportedly walked away and Jonathan followed him.

A witness said they heard more arguing, then a gunshot.

The arrest report says Jaden shot the deceased in the chest with a shotgun using a buckshot load. Jonathan was pronounced dead at the scene.

The arrest report indicates Jaden gave investigators an account of what happened, but the statement is redacted from the report.

The charges are subject to change and the investigation is still pending.

"These charges are preliminary and will be reviewed by the State Attorney's Office," according to the statement. "This is an ongoing investigation, more information will be released as it becomes available."
