JAY-Z Settles Roc Nation Copyright Infringement Lawsuit

Back in spring 2017, JAY-Z and Roc Nation were sued by Iconix Brand Group for copyright infringement over their use of the Roc Nation logo on Major League Baseball apparel. That suit was dismissed on November 13, The Fashion Law reports and Pitchfork can confirm via court records. Pitchfork has reached out to JAY-Z’s representatives and lawyers, as well as lawyers for Iconix and Roc Nation.

In the original complaint, Iconix claimed that it never consented or authorized the Roc Nation logo’s use in a series of New Era baseball caps that featured various Major League Baseball logos. In the lawsuit, Iconix said that, in 2007, it had paid over $200 million for the intellectual property rights for the “licensing and brand management” of the Roc Nation logo. By using the logo on New Era caps, Iconix argued that “[JAY-Z] and his various companies... deliberately undermined a series of agreements.”
