A running list of closures and event cancellations in Louisville amid blistering cold

Many schools, businesses and events have shut down leading up to the holiday weekend due to severe winter weather that hit the region Thursday evening.

Thursday evening, Louisville saw nearly two inches of snow along with below-freezing temperatures and wind chill. A wind chill advisory was issued until 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon, and a chance of flurries persists from Friday evening into Saturday. Temperatures aren't expected to warm above freezing until Tuesday, the National Weather Service said.

Jefferson County Public Schools was among the first organizations to announce it would shutter operations amid the cold front.

UPS, Louisville's largest employer with more than 25,000 local employees, announced it will remain open despite the frigid conditions, meanwhile, as it continues to prepare for the holiday season.

Jefferson County Public Schools

All school activities for students and staff will be canceled and all JCPS buildings will be closed Friday.

Classes were already out of session for winter break. But Wednesday, the district announced all JCPS activities for students after 4 p.m. Thursday have been canceled, including athletic events and practices. Facilities will be closed entirely Friday.

Teachers and staff will work from home Friday as they prepare for students to return from the holiday break. Classes are set to resume Jan. 4.

Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport

Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport is seeing many flights delayed or canceled Friday.

Travelers can check on flight cancellations and delays on the Louisville airport website.

Kentucky Derby Museum

The Kentucky Derby Museum has closed and will reopen after Christmas Day.

Kentucky Science Center

The Kentucky Science Center in Louisville will be closed Friday and reopen at 9:30 a.m. Monday.

Waterfront Botanical Gardens

Gardens Aglimmer events for Thursday and Friday have been canceled and tickets have been refunded.

Speed Art Museum

Louisville's Speed Art Museum plans to open late Friday, welcoming visitors at 1 p.m. instead of its usual opening time of 10 a.m.

Louisville Ballet

The Louisville Ballet and partner Kentucky Performing Arts have canceled the remaining performances of The Brown-Forman Nutcracker on Thursday and Friday evenings.

Performances will not be rescheduled and ticket holders have been alerted, according to Tim Lawson, spokesperson for the ballet.

Louisville Slugger Museum

The Louisville Slugger Museum will be closed Friday and over the weekend but plans to reopen with normal hours Monday.

Muhammad Ali Center

The Muhammad Ali Center will be closed on Friday and will reopen Monday, according to the center's Twitter.

"The safety of our patrons and employees is our number one priority," they wrote.

Yew Dell Botanical Gardens

Yew Dell will be closed Friday and will reopen on Jan. 2.

PG&J's Dog Park Bar

Karaoke at PG&J's Dog Park Bar is canceled Thursday night and will close at 7 p.m. due to the weather, according to the bar's Twitter account.

Bernheim Forest

The Muhammad Ali Center will be closed on Friday and will reopen after Sunday, according to the center's Twitter.

"The safety of our patrons and employees is our number one priority," they wrote.

Bernheim Forest

Bernheim will be closed Friday and Saturday due to the weather.

CC Powersports

Stores across Louisville and Indiana will be closed on Friday and reopen Tuesday.

Kosair Shriner's Temple

Karaoke will be canceled Thursday and will resume as scheduled Dec. 29.

Sweet Stuff Bakery

The Sweet Stuff Bakery in New Albany, Indiana, will close at 6 p.m. Thursday and stay closed through Monday.

Ivy Tech Community College

The Sellersburg, Indiana branch of Ivy Tech Community College will open virtually at 3 p.m. Friday.

John Kenyon Eye Centers

John Kenyon Eye Centers will be closed across the area Friday until Monday.

LSC Communications

The Lebanon Junction location of LSC Communications will be closed after the completion of the first shift on Thursday and will remain closed through Monday.

Sweet Evening Breeze

Sweet Evening Breeze will be closed Friday and reopen Dec. 26.

Acorn Apparel

Acorn Apparel will be closed Friday and reopen Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
