Effective July 5th, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos is stepping down from his CEO position, as announced during a recent shareholder’s meeting.

The online retail giant first revealed back in February plans for Bezos to move on from his CEO position later this year, though an exact date was left up to speculation. Andy Jassy, chief executive of Amazon Web Services, has been confirmed as Amazon’s next glorious leader.

Jassy, who first joined Amazon back in 1997, guided the company’s cloud-computing services from a nascent idea into a $46 billion industry over the course of two decades. In a letter to employees, Bezos lauded Jassy’s track record, saying “Andy is well known inside the company and has been at Amazon almost as long as I have. He will be an outstanding leader, and he has my full confidence.”

Bezos will become Amazon’s Executive Chairman, noting that he intends to “focus on new projects and early initiatives” in his new role.

While Bezos’ reasoning for his role change is a bit vague, we can only assume it’s to give the tycoon some breathing room as he shifts focus to a number of other ventures, including his Blue Origin aerospace endeavor and the Bezos Day One Fund. There’s also the ongoing task of maintaining his impressively titanic personal wealth.

Bezos’ title will change on paper, but he’ll likely continue to hold considerable sway over Amazon’s direction as its largest shareholder with a stake valued at over $180 billion. Combined with being the company’s hallowed founder and historically its most public face, there’s no doubt Bezos will continue to have a big impact on Amazon’s culture.

Though it’s expected that not much will change fundamentally, Jassy will have a few obstacles to face as new CEO. Amazon saw a wildly successful 2020 with its stock skyrocketing 76% over the past year, even as other retail conglomerates struggled to stay afloat during the pandemic. However, amid this massive growth comes mounting scrutiny over workplace conditions for employees, as well as government concerns over Amazon’s monopolistic tendencies. These developments will be unique challenges for Jassy in the long road ahead as Amazon’s top brass.

Still, as a longstanding, two-and-a-half decades Amazon veteran, Jassy is definitely the man for the job. Hopefully, this new change in leadership will give Amazon a fresh wind in its sails, guiding the company out of the turbulence of the last year, and into the calm waters of a post-pandemic world.
