Jeff Sessions Gets a Tearful "Good Riddance" from SNL

With help from Robert DeNiro and Adele.

With Jeff Sessions rudely booted from the Justice Department, late-night TV has been savoring their goodbyes to one of the most destructive and repugnant members of the Trump administration. He's getting replaced by an even bigger crony, or as Kate McKinnon in a Sessions-bald cap says, "I don't understand how Mr. Trump could replace me with Matt Whitaker. He's just a shady businessman with no experience who's blindly loyal to Donald Trump—okay, hearing it out loud, that makes sense."

SNL's cold open Saturday night was Sessions' last day in his office, packing mementos like a framed letter from Coretta Scott King calling him a son of a bitch and getting an explicit farewell hand-turkey from the Trump boys. Throughout, Sessions opines about his tenure:

Goodbye, office. Sure did have some good times here during my almost 16 months as the attorney general. My trusty Bible. I justified a lot of bad things with this book. Picture of my family tree. [Holds up framed photo of literal tree.] That was my room. Oh, here's my copy of the Bob Woodward book. In chapter 26 the president calls me mentally retarded. Oh, look at this! I got the NAACP's first ironic award. It says, "Lifetime Achievement," parenthesis, "Sarcastic."

(Note: That Woodward line is real.)

The sketch is capped off with an appearance by Robert DeNiro as Robert Mueller, who delivers the first good Harry Potter joke in God knows how many years. But there may be nothing more haunting than McKinnon singing Adele in her full Jeff Sessions impression.
