Jeff Sessions loses bid for his old Senate seat

Former U.S. attorney general Jeff Sessions has been knocked out of the race for his old Senate seat.

Sessions, who was fired by President Trump in 2018, lost the Republican primary in Alabama on Tuesday (July 14) to his Trump-backed opponent, newcomer Tommy Tuberville.

Sessions had hoped to return to the U.S. Senate, where he had been a member for 20 years before becoming attorney general.

Once a prominent member of Trump's administration, he eventually fell out of favor with the President, who endorsed Tuberville in March.

And on Tuesday Trump was quick to celebrate the victory of his candidate of choice on Twitter.

Tuberville will now face Democrat Doug Jones in the general election in November.

Jones pulled off a serious upset in the heavily Republican state in a special election in 2017.
