Jefferson County Health Scores: This Month's Restaurant Ratings

Want to know which restaurants in Jefferson County scored an 85 or below in their most recent health inspection? Here they are.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - As August comes to a close, the Jefferson County Department of Health is wrapping up its health inspections for the month. The department inspected more than 200 eateries in August, and most of the establishments made the grade. Some, however, did not.

Here are the eateries that received a score of 85 or lower, and why:

Food Giant, 7580 Parkway Drive, Leeds (85): Points were deducted for employees wearing jewelry while preparing food; improperly labeled food items; food contact surfaces not properly cleaned and sanitized; dried blood and meat particles on the undersides and frames of the meat saws and cutting tables; badly cracked and deteriorating speedrack trays; blown bulbs in several fixtures in the meat cutting room.

Top That Grille II, 1371 Bessemer Road, Birmingham (85): Points deducted for employees not washing hands before handling food; food not kept at proper temperature; accumulation of grime and residue on shelving inside of the WI cooler and on shelving inside of dry storage areas; accumulation of grime and residue on doors of equipment; accumulation of grease and grime on vents of fly fan; damaged gaskets on ice machine and other equipment.

Panchos Mexican Grill, 1676 Montclair Road, Birmingham (85): Points deducted for failure to provide an employee health policy that states what actions are necessary when an employee has a specific symptom or diagnosis related to diseases that are transmissible through food; failure to provide food safety training for all foodhandlers as required; and, provide readily available documentation of food safety training for all employees at all hours of operation; use of food contact surfaces which alter color, odor, or taste of food, or which allow migration of deleterious substances and that are not safe under normal use conditions; grease extractors in the ventilation hood are damaged, deteriorating, and missing baffles.

Mugshots Grill & Bar, 2311 Richard Arrington Blvd., Birmingham (83): Points deducted for employees failing to wear hair restraints; mildew and mold on the interior of ice machine; grime, residue, and mold on the interior of beverage guns at bar; unclean nonfood contact surfaces; improper temperature for water at handwashing station; drain flies in kitchen area and bar area.

La Brisa, 2341 John Hawkins Parkway, Hoover (81): Points deducted for failure to provide an employee health policy that states what actions are necessary when an employee has a specific symptom or diagnosis related to diseases that are transmissible through food; carnitas, cheese sauce, refried beans, and salsa (various styles/ flavors) stored in the RI coolers in the kitchen were either not date marked or past the 7 day limit; cheese stored in the bar cooler was past the date limit; aw beef and chicken stored above refried beans, salsa, and tamales; low hot water pressure at the handsink in the women's restroom; accumulation of food trash on the ground around the dumpster; several roaches near the hood and in the dish washing area; one of the lights in the RI freezer not working properly.

Brookwood Medical Center Main Cafe, 2010 Medical Center Drive, Birmingham (75): Points deducted for cheese which had been dripped on stored in dairy cooler under condensate leak; food not stored at the proper temperature; equipment in bad repair; failure to keep dumpster lids closed.
