Jefferson Schools take part in Great Lakes Great Apple Crunch Day

More than 800 Jefferson Schools students and staff participated in Thursday's Great Lakes Great Apple Crunch Day.

Schools, communities and local farmers encouraged at least 400,000 people to eat apples across four states.

"Jefferson participated in hopes to bring awareness to continued healthy eating and to support farm-to-school and other local food purchasing initiatives," Jenn Brown, Jefferson's nutrition and food service director, said in an email message. "It is part of my focus, along with my management company, Sodexo, to bring fun and healthy events to the district. I am unaware of any other districts that have participated."

About 440 students and staff at Jefferson Middle School participated in the Great Lakes Great Apple Crunch Day at Jefferson Schools. In all, about 800 from Jefferson took part.

Later this month, Brown said, Sodt Elementary students will participate in an apple art project and have apples as a snack.
