Jeffersonville man arrested, accused of assaulting police during Jan. 6 insurrection

A Jeffersonville, Indiana, man has been arrested on multiple felony and misdemeanor charges, including assaulting law enforcement, in connection with his actions at the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection, according to a news release from the U.S. Department of Justice.

Curtis Logan Tate, 32, was arrested by federal agents Thursday and charged with civil disorder, assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers using a deadly or dangerous weapon, and destruction of government property, according to the release.

Tate is also charged with several misdemeanor offenses, including entering, having disorderly and disruptive conduct, and engaging in physical violence in a restricted building or grounds.

According to the release, officials say Tate attended a rally in Washington, D.C., and later traveled toward the U.S. Capitol building. Tate is shown on various open-source video and body-worn camera footage at various places in Washington, D.C., as well as in the restricted area of the U.S. Capitol grounds, including the Lower West Terrace tunnel.

Tate reportedly appears in Metropolitan Police Department body camera footage using a metal baton to strike an officer on the hand near the Lower West Terrace at around 2 p.m. that day, police say.

Video footage taken later in the day allegedly shows Tate charging a line of police officers near the Capitol entrance while waving the baton, destroying property and throwing items at other officers on the premises, the release reads.

Tate has previously denied attacking law enforcement in a USA TODAY interview.

“I would never hurt an officer. I come from a military background, I'm very respectful of our military and police,” Tate said. “I know I didn't hurt anybody — I'm not speaking here bold as brass, because you never know what can happen — but I've never, ever once hurt, or put my hands on an officer.”

Tate was arrested in Wilmington, North Carolina, and will make his initial appearance in the Eastern District of North Carolina. It is unclear when he will appear.

Since Jan. 6, 2021, more than 1,106 individuals have been arrested for crimes related to the breach of the U.S. Capitol. Tate is among more than 350 individuals who have been charged specifically with assaulting or impeding law enforcement.
