The disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein died by apparent suicide last year while being held without bail on federal charges of sex trafficking minors and conspiracy.
British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell, a longtime Epstein friend and alleged madam, was arrested in early July by the FBI on charges including enticing minors to travel to engage in sexual acts and the transportation of a minor with intent to engage in sexual acts.
Epstein took a secretive and widely criticized plea deal in 2008 for charges including procuring a minor for prostitution. Many of his high-profile friends supported him after his 13 months in jail.
His other connections include former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, who frequented a Manhattan building that housed young models, girlfriends, pilots, and other Epstein associates for years, a Business Insider investigation found.
From Epstein's death to his connections, to his finances and to his legal battles, here's what Business Insider learned about the multimillionaire.
A close friend of Jeffrey Epstein, the former financier who died by apparent suicide in New York while being held on charges of sex-trafficking minors, has been arrested by the FBI.
British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell was taken into custody in New Hampshire, where she had been living in a sprawling rural estate. The FBI had been tracking Maxwell's whereabouts throughout their investigation into Epstein and his associates.
Maxwell was named as a beneficiary on multiple Epstein trusts, Business Insider reported in a December investigation into Epstein's finances.
Earlier in the summer, Epstein became the focus of a four-part Netflix docuseries titled "Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich." Among the docuseries' writers are best-selling author (and Epstein neighbor) James Patterson, who wrote a nonfiction book on Epstein in 2017.
Epstein flew former President Bill Clinton on his private plane, partied with President Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago in the '90s, and managed money for a high-profile billionaire.
Despite his tabloid-worthy exploits, the disgraced money manager kept much of his life under wraps. Here's what Business Insider learned about his finances, network, and eventual death at the height of the case.
