White House press secretary Jen Psaki educated Fox News’ Peter Doocy — and everyone else — on the leading killer of police officers for the last two years during a briefing on Tuesday. As it turns out, the top killer of cops is COVID-19.

Doocy asked Psaki about the possible ramifications of mass walk-offs by law enforcement officers who might refuse to comply with potential vaccine mandates, questioning if such an event could undercut the purported goal of requirements, which is safety.

“What was the number one cause of death among police officers last year? Do you know?” Psaki responded, before answering her own question. “COVID-19, so that’s something we’re working to address and police departments are working to address.”

She is correct: One database that tracks deaths of law enforcement officers, the Officer Down Memorial Page, notes that out of 369 officer deaths in 2021, a total of 237 were caused by COVID-19. By comparison, one officer’s death is attributed to “9/11 related illness,” 15 officers died of heart attacks and three were stabbed.

Last year, 374 officers died. Of those, 245 died of COVID-19, which was the single biggest cause of death among that population in 2020.

During an interview on “Fox News Sunday,” Dr. Anthony Fauci implored police officers to get vaccinated.

“Think about the implications of not getting vaccinated when you’re in a position where you have a responsible job, and you want to protect yourself because you’re needed at your job, whether you’re a police officer or a pilot or any other of those kinds of occupations,” said the nation’s top infections disease expert.

Still, police unions around the country are encouraging their members to resist any pushes toward vaccination in their regions or departments.
