Jenna Bush Hager reveals she had suffered an ectopic pregnancy: It was 'very isolating'

Jenna Bush Hager is overjoyed to be expecting her third child, but says she's all too familiar with the "pain" that comes with pregnancy complications and fertility struggles.

The "Today" show co-host, 37, opened up about an unsuccessful pregnancy before her first child. Hager revealed that she learned something was wrong shortly after finding out she was expecting.

"Before I had Mila, I had a pregnancy in my fallopian tube," Hager told Meredith Vieira during Tuesday's episode. "It was my first pregnancy…I go to the doctor’s office and she said, 'Yeah, you’re pregnant, we gave the blood test, but we can’t find the baby.'"

Hager's excitement soon turned to shock. She said, "I had no idea what an ectopic pregnancy was. They looked up and the baby was in my fallopian tube."

An ectopic pregnancy occurs when "a fertilized egg implants and grows outside the main cavity of the uterus," according to Mayo Clinic. The fertilized egg "can't survive" and can cause life-threatening bleeding if the fallopian tube (which normally carries eggs from the ovaries to the uterus) ruptures.

Hager said she was rushed into emergency surgery to have her fallopian tube removed, while her husband, Henry Chase Hager, and twin sister, Barbara Pierce Bush, were both out of town.

"I was alone," an emotional Hager said, calling the whole ordeal "very isolating."

The daughter of former president George W. Bush and first lady Laura Bush continued: "There is joy and there is pain."

Hager's revelation came one day after announcing that she's expecting baby No. 3. "Ya'll I'm very pregnant, so I don't know how I hid this," Hager said Monday through smiles. She's having a boy.
