Jenna Dewan recounts 'very intense year' following split from Channing Tatum
Jenna Dewan is opening up about how she's taking care of herself a year after splitting from husband Channing Tatum.
"It's no secret I had a very intense year and a lot of change," she told "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" guest host John Cena on Friday, referencing her separation from Channing Tatum last year.
How has Dewan held up since then? In part, thanks to what she calls "hippie" practices.
"I'm sort of a seeker. I like to do practices and rituals and things that connect me to something greater than myself, bigger than myself," she told Cena. "I used a lot of those techniques and things like that to help me through change and a crazy year."
The actress also worked things out through writing a memoir titled "Gracefully You: How to Live Your Best Life Every Day" (due in October), which she says includes "a lot of personal stories" in addition to more light-hearted material and anecdotes about her background in dance.
"It was really cathartic and actually fun to write this," she said of the experience.
Dewan also mentioned her new boyfriend, Broadway actor Steve Kazee, who turned her into a huge fan of WWE.
"He got me so into it," she said. "So much so that I watch Wrestlemania by myself. He wasn't even in town and I watched Wrestlemania because I was like, 'I have to know if Becky Lynch was going to beat Ronda Rousey.' "
Cena applauded Dewan for opening up about her struggles in such a public way.
"I'm super happy you did this, because …We all have ups and downs and I love reading material like this where someone is brave enough to share their journey."
Dewan and Tatum, both 38, met as the romantic leads of the hip-hop dance film "Step Up," before getting married in 2009 and giving birth to daughter Everly in 2013. In a joint statement on April 2, 2018, the couple announced their separation.
"We fell deeply in love so many years ago and have had a magical journey together," the statement read. "Absolutely nothing has changed about how much we love one another, but love is a beautiful adventure that is taking us on different paths for now."
