Jennette McCurdy Isn’t Coming Back for the "iCarly" Reboot Because She’s “Ashamed” of the Role

It looks like the reboot of iCarly is officially going to be Sam Puckett-less. Jennette McCurdy, who played the character on the Nickelodeon show for six seasons, just revealed that she has quit acting and she's "ashamed" of her role on the show.
In a recent episode of her podcast, Empty Inside, Jennette talked to actress Anna Farris about her decision to quit acting in order to get into writing and directing. She admitted that it was her mom who got her started in acting when she was just six years old and she didn't like it at first.
"By sort of age, I guess, 10 or 11, I was the main financial support for my family," she said. "My family didn't have a lot of money, and this was the way out, which I actually think was helpful in driving me to some degree of success."
Despite that, Jennette revealed that "acting was difficult" for her and she always got very nervous during auditions.
"Once I started to get the nerves under control was when I started to actually get some traction, but I ultimately quit after my mom passed away because with her death kind of died a lot of her ideas for my life," she said.
Because of all of that, it doesn't seem like Jennette will be coming back for the iCarly reboot, which starts filming this month. In fact, Jennette said that she's "so ashamed" of her previous roles.
"I resent my career in a lot of ways," she said. "I feel so unfulfilled by the roles that I played and felt like it was the most cheesy, embarrassing." She said that she was on the show from the age of 13 to 21 and by the time she was 15, she was already embarrassed by it. "My friends at 15, they're not like, 'Oh, cool, you're on this Nickelodeon show.' It was embarrassing. And I imagine there's a very different experience to be had with acting if you're proud of your roles, and if you feel fulfilled by them."
That being said, Jennette did say she would maybe act again if she was working with a director she "really admired," though it doesn't seem like iCarly fits that criteria.
Back in December 2020, not long after the announcement of the reboot, the show's producer, Jay Kogen, answered some fan questions on Twitter. One person asked if Jennette would be joining the cast. "It's her call," Jay responded, and now that Jennette has spoken out, it seems like she will not be participating in the show.
It's her call.
