How Jennette McCurdy's Brothers Feel About Her Book ‘I’m Glad My Mom Died’

Jennette McCurdy's recently-published memoir, I'm Glad My Mom Died, has truly been making waves since it debuted a little over a week ago. On her list of supporters? The former child star's three brothers, Dustin, Marcus, and Scott McCurdy. When asked by The Hollywood Reporter whether the three of her brothers needed time to process the book's title, the iCarly alum simply responded "not at all."
"My brothers have been so supportive, so understanding. They get the title, to put it simply," she expanded. A refresher: Jennette's mother died in 2013 from cancer—an experience that the actor has openly expressed having mixed feelings on both IRL and in the memoir. I'm Glad My Mom Died details how the 30-year-old's mom did everything from force her into an acting career to instill an eating disorder in her, making the book's title an automatic non-negotiable for Jennette.
"It was also a title that I knew I wanted early on. I wanted something that was bold and also something that I meant sincerely," Jennette said. "I would never use a bold and attention-grabbing title if it weren't authentic. I would never do it if it were just coming from a flippant place. That's not my approach to humor."
The title has understandably been both lauded and scrutinized by readers, but the author said she ultimately "knew that anybody who had experienced parental abuse would understand the title, and anybody who had a sense of humor would understand the title."
Other notable moments in the memoir include her experiences on the set of iCarly and the disparities between how she and her Sam & Cat costar Ariana Grande were treated. She also admitted much of her childhood career was an attempt to please her mother. "My mom had always dreamt of being a famous actor and she became obsessed with making me a star," she said. "I felt like my job was to keep the peace. And I wanted to make my mom happy."
Another one of Jennette's former costars, Josh Peck, showed nothing but admiration for the retired actor, gushing to Page Six, "I think she is incredibly brave to tell her story and to be as honest as she is...One of her great talents is her wit and how thoughtful she is and as soon as I was able to pick up the book I did because I really wanted to see the way she told her story." Jennette and Miranda Cosgrove also remain close to this day.
