JENNIE: Augusta Players “Dreamgirls” nearly sold out

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) — The award winning Broadway musical “Dreamgirls” is about to break records right here in the Garden City, too.

“Dreamgirls” is coming up the last weekend in February. And here to generate more buzz about the amazing cast and crew are Scott Seidl, who is the executive and artistic director of the Augusta Players, and Sean Moten, who is no stranger to the main stage. But this time he’s directing the show. Shawn and Scott. So glad to have you all here.

JENNIE: “Dreamgirls,” what a great musical. And you. How fun is this for you to be directing such a blockbuster?

Sean Moton: “It is a lot of fun. I’ve done a lot of theater in Augusta and I’ve done a couple of professional directing gigs, but this is the first time I’ve directed anything on this scale. If you know anything about the players shows they are, I mean, comparable to like a Broadway show. I mean, they’re really they’re really big stuff. And I have Scott right here by my side helping me along the way. But no, we have so much talent and it’s going to be amazing.”

Scott Seidl: “I sit in awe of these voices on a nightly basis. Every single cast member, it’s 20 plus folks in the cast. And every single one of them, it could be starring in a show somewhere right now. And they’ve chosen to be part of this very special production, that Sean’s putting together that centers around family and around the arts. And I mean, the story’s the stories. If you’ve seen the movie with Beyonce, it’s that story. But the production that Sean has crafted is has so much heart to it. And it just exists on an emotional level that I don’t know that we’ve seen recently on our stage.”

Sean Moton: “I think that most people are going to come to this show thinking of the movie, which is fine because the movie is amazing. But the show has so much more music and it’s so… it’s so much more intricate. The songs go on and on and on. It’s a beautiful, beautiful piece. And they’re going to walk away wanting to go by a Broadway soundtrack and learn the full story of the musical.”

“Dreamgirls” is coming up this weekend, Friday, February 23rd, and Saturday, February 24th at 8 p.m. and a Sunday matinee on the 25th at 3 p.m. It’s at the Imperial Theater on Broad Street. For more information or tickets, just go to augustaplayers.org or call 706-826-4707.
