JENNIE: Not a candidate for LASIK? EVO implants may be right for you

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF)– Vision correction surgery is a dream come true for many people who want to free themselves of the hassle of wearing glasses and contact lenses.

The ophthalmology community is excited to finally have FDA approval of the EVO implantable lens.

Patients cannot see or feel it, and it requires zero maintenance. EVO gives LASIK-like results to patients who may not be good candidates for LASIK, like people with dry eyes.

EVO offers improved night vision and provides UV protection. It cab be removed if the patient doesn’t want it anymore. It’s been in research and development for more than a decade.

And this is pretty amazing: EVO lenses have been implanted in about 2,000,000 eyeballs around the world!

We’ve got an expert with us today to talk about this amazing treatment. Dr. Beau Gardner is one of the Augusta Eye Guys, over at Eye Physicians and Surgeons… and one of his EVO patients is here, too, Evamaria Foltz.

So, LASIK is the most recognized type of laser eye surgery and the most widely performed. It’s less invasive invasive and less expensive, but it’s not for everyone… and that’s why ophthalmologists are excited about the EVO option.

LASIK reshapes the cornea to correct near & farsightedness, and astigmatism … but EVO is about implanting a lens designed specifically for each patient. And Dr. Gardner says this is important: EVO lenses are made from a natural substance.

“But it’s basically making a polymer out of collagen, which is a natural substance in our bodies. And so they have, basically, figured out a way to create a lens out of natural materials – in a proprietary way, of course. So it’s natural, it’s soft, it’s flexible, so it fits right the natural lens, as an additive lens, inside the eye.”

EVO is not covered by insurance, it’s considered an elective procedure. But Foltz says in her experience, the cost will balance out as she no longer has to buy glasses and contact lenses.
