Jennifer Garner Can't Believe She's Covering People's 2019 Beautiful Issue

There really isn’t anyone more deserving than Jennifer Garner as People’s 2019 Beautiful Issue cover star. The big announcement was made late Tuesday evening and appropriately on the 15th anniversary of 13 Going on 30, which Garner starred in alongside Mark Ruffalo. The People magazine honor bestowed on the actress is one she still can’t wrap her mind around. During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that will air on Wednesday and in which the 47-year-old first unveiled her Beautiful Issue cover, Garner repeatedly stated how overwhelmed she felt.

“I’ve never been more nervous than I am today,” she told host Ellen DeGeneres. “I guess I thought you guys would boo. You know what I mean? Like you guys are expecting Kaia Gerber and it’s me. I feel like bolting.” She even went as far to joke, “People is now a magazine for AARP,” and also stated while appearing embarrassed, “It’s so ridiculous, it’s so silly, but it’s nice.”

The former Alias star couldn’t believe the publication wanted to her be on this year’s cover of the Beautiful Issue, but the selection makes complete sense. After years in the spotlight, Garner has made a whole new name for herself and is even more beloved by her fans than before. Between being what sounds like a fabulous mom and stealing the hearts of everyone on Instagram, she feels like a friend who just also happens to be extremely famous, but doesn’t see herself as a celebrity.

On People’s Instagram, Garner also opened up about her cover and why it was difficult for her to accept the magazine’s honor at first. “I was very surprised and it took me a minute, honestly, to be… accept it and to be thrilled. I think at first I just felt like, ‘Oh my gosh, I don’t know, I don’t think, I think what does that say? Is that saying that I think of myself that way, does that say, you know, it was a lot for me to take in.”

In the same video, she also explained what beauty means to her. Just wait until you hear her definition, which proves exactly why People put her on the cover. “I think about beauty very holistically, and I feel like I’m happier and feel prettier the less I look in the mirror, and the more I am thinking about my impact outside,” she said. “You know, whether it’s smiling at people on the street, or actually going out and trying to help other people. It’s about what you’re getting back from people instead of what you’re putting out there, I think.”

Last year, Pink covered People’s first Beautiful Issue. Prior to that, the issue was known as People’s Most Beautiful, but the publication decided to change the name after 28 years. As explained in a letter from editor Jess Cagle in April 2018, “This year we’re renaming it ‘The Beautiful Issue’ — to make clear that the issue is not a beauty contest. Nothing else has changed. As always it will feature beautiful women (and a few men) of all shapes, sizes and colors, and it will celebrate the most beautiful qualities of all: strength, humanity and artistry.”

Whether she believes it or not, there’s no denying Garner embodies all of the qualities mentioned above and they truly make her a beautiful person inside and out.
