Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez Just Confirmed They’ve Broken Up

Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez have officially broken up, the couple confirmed to Today on Thursday, April 15. 

“We have realized we are better as friends and look forward to remaining so,” the couple said in a joint statement. “We will continue to work together and support each other on our shared businesses and projects. We wish the best for each other and one another’s children. Out of respect for them, the only other comment we have to say is thank you to everyone who has sent kind words and support.” 

This comes after weeks of speculation the couple was on the rocks. In early March, reports emerged that Lopez and Rodriguez had split. However, they shut down the chatter with a statement to People, saying, “We are working through some things.” A source at the time said, “They never officially broke up and talked about it but are still together. They hit a rough patch. But were not broken up.” 

But now the split is confirmed. Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez were first linked in 2017. “They have been dating for a few weeks,” a source told People in March of that year. “[Alex] has been around her family, and [Jennifer] really likes that he is a dad. She is aware, though, that he is a ladies’ man too and is being cautious. For now, it’s just fun. She is single and enjoys dating.”

Two years later they got engaged and had wedding plans slated for 2020—but they were put on pause because of the coronavirus pandemic. 

Lopez told Allure for its March 2021 issue that she and Rodriguez had tried therapy. “I miss being creative and running on 150,” she told the magazine. “But Alex, of all people, was like, ‘I love it. I love being at home. I love doing my Zooms. I love knowing the kids are there, and you’re there all the time.’ It has been actually really good. We got to work on ourselves. We did therapy. I think it was really helpful for us in our relationship.”
