Jennifer Lopez Still Has A-Rod's $1.8M Engagement Ring. Who Gets to Keep It Is Complicated

Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez announced this morning that they have broken up and intend to remain friends. TMZ reported this afternoon that there's one issue the two still need to resolve, though: who gets custody of the $1.8 million engagement ring that Rodriguez gave Lopez.

Multiple sources told TMZ that Lopez has the ring but not physically with her in the Dominican Republic, where she's been filming Shotgun Wedding. There's no slight intended with its absence: She just didn't want to it “lying around every day while she films for security reasons,” the outlet wrote.

While legally, Rodriguez may have grounds to get the ring back as the person who bought and proposed with it, the reality for him and J.Lo is a little more complicated because of how much expensive jewelry they gave each other.

TMZ's sources said they exchanged “massive amounts of jewelry” during their relationship, with Lopez gifting Rodriguez more watches for his collection. The two have not discussed yet who gets the engagement ring, but figuring that out shouldn't be an issue between them, sources told TMZ, as they apparently still get along.

In their statement, Lopez and Rodriguez stressed their well wishes for each other going forward. The couple started dating in 2017 and got engaged in March 2019, so there's years of history and blended family time spent together.

“We have realized we are better as friends and look forward to remaining so,” they said in their statement. “We will continue to work together and support each other on our shared businesses and projects. We wish the best for each other and one another’s children. Out of respect for them, the only other comment we have to say is thank you to everyone who has sent kind words and support.”
