Jennifer Seo, Mattison Frick of Arizona take top two spots at High School Golf Invitational

Two Arizona high school golfers finished  on top of a 215-player field at the 2022 Girls High School Golf National Invitational at Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina Wednesday.

After three days and 17,000 yards of golf, two of Arizona’s top high school girl golfers, Jennifer Seo of Chandler's Hamilton HIgh School and Mattison Frick of Peoria Liberty High School finished first and second respectively.

The three-day tournament is invite-only, drawing the best high school golf teams and individuals based on their state performances.

Seo shot a three-day total of 211 to win the individual tournament.

Seo, who will be entering her senior year this fall, won the Division I state title last fall. Seo led the Huskies to a third-place finish in the team state tournament and was Arizona’s top scorer (-2.386) and had the best scoring average (33). She also won four more events throughout the regular season.

Seo was named to The Republic's All-Arizona girls golf team this past school year and later was named The Republic's girls high school golfer of the year at the Arizona HIgh School Sports Awards in early June.

Over the past three days Seo had to crawl her way up to the top.  After day one, she was tied for 12th place, finishing  at 73 and four strokes away from the first place. However, heading into the second day she found her momentum, totaled 71 and moved up six spots, inching closer to the top.

On day three, Seo seemed untouchable. Despite a rain delay to begin the third round, she was able to make a splash and finish with a 67 on the day to finish with a 211 total, only 3-under-par for the tournament.

University of Illinois commit Mattison Frick recently graduated from Liberty High School. Her second-place finish at state, resulted in the Lions earning their first ever AIA Division I State Championship this past season. Frick, also named to The Republic's All-Arizona girls golf team,  and the entire Lions girls golf team were invited to Pinehurst tournament.

Only two shots behind Seo was fellow Arizonan Frick. In her three-day showing, Frick stayed consistent, ending every day in the top three.

On day one she landed a 70, sitting comfortably in second overall, however, in round two she shot a 73 resulting in her dropping to third. Mimicking day one, Frick finished the final day with a 70, for a three-day score of  213, 5-under-par for the whole tournament, to finish second behind Seo.

Chasing one another on the golf course is nothing new to these two. During this season's State Championship, Seo finished with a total of 134, 8-under-par, placing her first, while Frick finished in second with a total of 138.

On the team side, Georgia's Lambert girls golf team earned back-to-back titles . Liberty High School sinsihed in fourth place out of the 28 teams who participated.  Also competing from Arizona was the team from Ironwood Ridge High School in Oro Valley, which finished tied for eighth place.

The boys invitational will take place from July 11-13 at Pinehurst.
