Jeremy Farmer found guilty of killing his dad, whose remains were found in storage unit

An Indianapolis man has been found guilty of killing his father, whose remains were found nearly two years ago in a Brownsburg storage facility, according to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.

A Marion County jury on Wednesday declared Jeremy Farmer guilty of shooting and killing his father, 58-year-old Roger Farmer, who was found dead May 2021 in an Ameri-Stor self-storage unit in the 1400 block of North Green Street. He had been reported missing in Dec. 2019. The coroner ruled he died from a gunshot wound to the head.

The discovery was made after someone at the facility became suspicious of the name attached to the unit and alerted police.

Court records state Roger Farmer went missing shortly after a hunting trip to Versailles, Indiana, days before Thanksgiving in 2019. Following his disappearance, his family continued to receive text messages from his phone number, and grew suspicious because the texts said were out of character. The father, his family noted, frequently used the “talk-to-text" function, and the new texts had punctuation and emojis.

Cellphone records later revealed Roger Farmer’s phone hadn’t left the family’s home near the Wayne Township area since he went missing.

Investigators also became aware of bank activity on Roger Farmer’s accounts after he went missing. Police found one transaction and video footage from a hardware store they say showed Jeremy Farmer bought heavy-duty cleaning wipes, Febreze, a 96-gallon trash can with wheels, germicidal bleach, a flashlight, latex gloves, extra heavy plastic drop cloths and Tide detergent pods, according to a probable cause affidavit.

A few witnesses later told police that Jeremy Farmer had bragged to them about shooting his dad twice in the head and hiding the body in a freezer inside the house. Friends further told police Jeremy Farmer had a history of stealing from his father.

Jeremy Farmer is scheduled to be sentenced April 28.
