Jeremy Long: Berks County district attorney donates forfeited drug money to Reading library

Dec. 9—The Reading Public Libraries will be getting a much-needed upgrade to its security camera system thanks to the Berks County district attorney's office.

District Attorney John T. Adams presented a $55,867 check to the library Wednesday afternoon to upgrade the security cameras at the library's four branches. The funds came from the county's drug forfeiture fund.

"I cannot think of a better institution to receive funding from our drug forfeiture fund to make the use of resources of our library system safe," Adams said. "This contribution will deter people from committing crimes in or near our libraries and will serve as protection for people utilizing the library to enhance their education or job searches or any reason they need to use the resources of the Reading Public Library system."

There have been incidents in the vicinity of the libraries and inside the buildins.

"The four Reading Public Library branches are busy community hubs for our residents," library Executive Director Bronwen Gamble said. "The safety and security of patrons and staff while using the library is vitally important."
