Jerry Springer was born in Highgate Tube station

Jerry Springer once revealed that he was actually born on the London Underground.

The US talk show host – who has died at the age of 79 – was born at the Highgate Tube station in 1944.

The station was being used as a shelter from the bombs during the Second World War.

Springer’s family were German-Jewish refugees and lived in East Finchley at the time, after arriving in Britain in 1939.

His mother Margot was spending the night in the shelter when she went into labour, and delivered Springer there.

Speaking in 2012, Springer said that his birth was “a little bit out of the ordinary”.

“During the war women who were in their ninth month would often spend the night at the subway stations because those were the bomb shelters,” he explained to the BBC.

The TV star, who was born Gerald Norman Springer, also shared that when he was a child he was “obsessed” with London buses and would watch them out of the window.

Springer was only in London until he was four, when he and his family moved to America.

They settled in the Queens area of New York.

He went on to serve as the Mayor of Cincinnati and hosted the Jerry Springer show, which was known for its outrageous guests and topics, from 1991 to 2018.

TMZ reported that Springer passed away peacefully at his home in Chicago on Thursday (27 April) after a brief illness.

The site reported that sources said the star had recently been diagnosed with cancer.
