New Jersey Cop Scales Burning Building to Save Trapped Children and Grandparents

A police officer scaled a residential building in North Brunswick, New Jersey, to save two children and their two grandparents, who had become trapped after a fire broke out on December 8.

The fire, believed to have been caused by a menorah candle, had destroyed the exit route for many of the residents, trapping them in the condominium complex, police said. One officer climbed up the building’s exterior to reach the trapped family, which included a four-year-old girl and a six-month-old boy, local media reported.

The officer first lowered the children, then the adults, 15 feet to officers who were waiting below, ABC7 said.

Police said that there were no serious injuries due to the fire; however, 12 condos were destroyed on the property and 28 people – half the residents – were left homeless as a result, ABC7 said. Credit: North Brunswick Police Department via Storyful
