New Jersey man accused of killing father on Christmas Eve with ax, pole saw

A New Jersey man used an ax and a pole saw to murder his father in their shared home on Christmas Eve, according to authorities.

Kyle Meyer, 33, was arrested Sunday night and charged with killing his 61-year-old father, Gregory, earlier that day in their home in Boonton Township, the Morris County prosecutor announced Monday.

In charging documents, authorities said they discovered a gruesome scene when they responded to the Meyer family home, the Bergen Record reported. Responding cops discovered an ax and a battery-operated pole saw near Gregory Meyer’s body, according to the cops.

Officers found bloodstains on both slicing tools and fabric from the victim’s jacket stuck on the pole saw, according to police documents obtained by the Bergen Record.

The victim was struck in the left leg with an ax, then suffered injuries to his head, hands and fingers from the pole saw, the county coroner’s office said in its report.

Investigators quickly identified Kyle Meyer as the prime suspect in the case. In addition to the men, Gregory Meyer’s mother and sister also lived in the house, the Record reported.

Cops quickly tracked Kyle Meyer to Paterson and arrested him there, according to the Morris County prosecutor’s office. He was detained around 9 p.m. Sunday, about eight hours after the initial 911 call.

Meyer was charged with murder, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. It’s unclear if the weapons charges are related to the ax and the pole saw, both of which are legal to own in New Jersey.

Meyer has been held without bail at Morris County Jail. Authorities did not publicly speculate on a motive for the killing.
