New Jersey man killed after 14-year-old loses control of pickup near Bunnell

A 14-year-old boy lost control of the pickup truck he was driving west of Bunnell, ejecting a man who suffered fatal injuries in the single-vehicle crash, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The 51-year-old man was hanging on the open driver's door while standing on the pickup's running boards when the crash occurred about 4:15 p.m. Thursday, according to the FHP.

The 14-year-old boy is a Bunnell resident while the man was from Budd Lake, New Jersey, the FHP stated.

The pickup was traveling west on Clove Avenue in Daytona North, when the 14-year-old lost control and the vehicle traveled into the north shoulder, the FHP stated.

The accident happened at Clove Avenue and Rosewood Street, the FHP stated.

The man was ejected and subsequently taken to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead, the FHP stated.

Florida law requires a person to be at least 15 years old before obtaining a learner's permit to operate a vehicle. Juveniles can get a graduated driver's license at the age of 16.

The 14-year-old did not suffer any injuries, the FHP stated.

The FHP stated it was unknown if the 14-year-old was wearing a seatbelt.

The crash remains under investigation, the FHP stated.
