Jersey Mike's, three Mexican restaurants, a reopening downtown 9 new businesses in Iowa City area

Three newly opened businesses in Coralville share something in common.

Their address on Crosspark Road.

The three are the latest businesses to open amid the newer development south of Forevergreen Road.

And with construction happening at the intersection of Wheaton Road and Coral Ridge Avenue, as well as a handful of empty storefronts across the way, more businesses are sure to come.

One of the new businesses is Jersey Mike’s Subs, located at 3268 Crosspark Road, Suite 105.

The sandwich chain is known for its cold subs prepared “Mike’s Way,” piled with onions, lettuce, tomatoes, vinegar, oil and spices.

In an email to the Press-Citizen, general manager Michael Wakeland said the community has welcomed the store with “arms wide open.”

Jersey Mike’s in Coralville opened Oct. 20. It’s open daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

This is the first Jersey Mike’s in Johnson County, with the nearest locations in Cedar Rapids and Marion.

And it has been popular.

According to Wakeland, this location has been the No. 1 Jersey Mike’s in sales out of its 2,100 stores.

At the end of the same lot is Foundry Food + Tap, which is now open to the public after its grand opening Wednesday afternoon, according to general manager Nehemiah Briggs.

Located at 3266 Crosspark Road, Suite 101, this is Foundry’s second location with its first in Bettendorf.

Foundry Food + Tap, according to Briggs, will offer the same menu as its other location. The restaurant serves burgers, wings and more as well as a variety of IPAs and ciders on tap.

The restaurant was founded by owner Michael DeWitte in 2019.

It’ll be open from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Monday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 1 a.m. on Sunday.

Here's a look at six other new business ventures in the Iowa City area, plus the reopening of a staple on the Ped Mall:

Tidal Wave Auto Spa

The third business new to Crosspark Road is Tidal Wave Auto Spa at 3274 Crosspark Road.

The car wash chain, which began in Georgia in 2004, is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.

Anthropologie

Anthropologie, a clothing retailer with stores across America and Canada, has opened at the Iowa River Landing.

The store is located at 920 E. Second Ave. in Coralville.

Anthropologie sells clothes, accessories, household items and more.

It’s open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday noon to 5 p.m.

Alebrije Mexican Restaurant

Downtown Iowa City has a new Mexican restaurant, Alebrije, that is “rooted in tradition and the true flavors of Mexico,” according to its Facebook page.

In Mexican folk art, Alebrije is the name of colorful sculptures that depict mythical creatures.

Its menu has everything from tacos al pastor to ceviche, birria to pozole. And for those looking to grab a drink, Alebrije has an extensive beer, cocktail and tequila menu.

Already, the new business has held dancing, live Mariachi music and a variety of specials for Veteran’s Day and Halloween.

The restaurant is located at 401 S. Linn St.

Alebrije is open Tuesday through Thursday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

La Mexicana Grocery Store and Taqueria

Like its name says, La Mexicana Grocery Store and Taqueria sells both groceries and tacos.

The store has tortillas, fresh produce, pan dulce and more to purchase. But its menu also includes birria tacos, barbacoa tacos, quesadillas, burritos and more.

The store is owned by Maria Teresa Martinez and her son, Brian.

La Mexicana Grocery Store is located at 1701 Second St. in Coralville, available for both dine-in and takeout.

The store recently updated its hours for the winter: 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

Taco Loco

Taco Loco is another new Mexican restaurant to Iowa City. Located at 1755 Boyrum St., Taco Loco serves tacos, tortas, burritos and more.

It is open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, and closed on Mondays.

Timothy Gabriel Salon

A new hair salon has opened up above the Starbucks off of Clinton Street in Iowa City.

Timothy Gabriel Salon, owned by stylist Timothy Gabriel Caster, offers haircuts, hair coloring, waxes, facials and more, all by appointment only.

The salon had previously been located at 2280 Willenbrock Circle in Iowa City before making the move toward the end of August.

According to the salon’s website, Caster, a Kansas City native, has been in the beauty industry for more than 20 years and grew up in his father’s salon business.

Timothy Gabriel Salon is located at 226 S. Clinton St.

Revival

Unique in this list, Revival isn’t a new store to Johnson County.

Rather, Revival has been a downtown Iowa City staple with its vintage finds and resale items since 2003, owned by Iowa City native Sheila Davisson.

But Revival had to temporarily vacate its location at 117 E. College St. due to building construction back in July 2020 as part of Tailwind Group’s $56.4 million redevelopment in the Ped Mall.

During that time, Revival had been operating online and through pop-ups hosted at other local businesses.

Now, Revival has returned and reopened to the public.

Maggy Moran, general manager at Revival, told the Press-Citizen its Nov. 11 reopening received an outpouring of support.

“We had probably the same amount of visitors that we typically get for a Black Friday, Small Business Saturday,” Moran said. “The whole community really came out and showed us a lot of love and how much they missed having us here. We expected a good turnout, but we did not expect what we got.”

Revival’s space will look different to longtime shoppers.

The store has returned to much of the building’s original features, complete with original hardwood floors, Moran said. The space has new arch detailing over the fitting rooms and the building also has an elevator.

Despite the physical changes, Revival’s offerings remain the same, including the return of its half-off sale after the holidays.

“We're just thankful that everybody has come out to support us so far,” Moran said.
