Jerusalem Marketplace opens at Hillsdale First Presbyterian Church

On Saturday, a special event will be held at Hillsdale First Presbyterian Church. The Jerusalem Market Place will open with free admission from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

Visitors will be able to relive biblical times in the environment of a marketplace set up to resemble a market in Jerusalem. Also, storytelling for both children and adults will teach more about the life of Jesus, in between opportunities to participate in fun games and to see a replica of a New Testament Bible at the Scriptorium booth. Woodworking and sculpturing will also be featured.

“It’s actually a mission and outreach event for our church,” said Brenda Barron, a co-chairman of the JMP Committee. “We support several local missions and worldwide missions, and we’ll be giving our profit to Samaritan’s Purse, designating it to the Ukrainian relief fund.”

The whole congregation, according to Barron, is involved in the event, including her fellow Co-Chairman Joyce Benzing, First Presbyterian Church Pastor Rev. Scott Cress, James Brandon, and Vicky Hayes – all of whom are a part of the JMP Committee.

As well as a home-made bake sale, there will be a Mediterranean-style luncheon served by the members of the church. The atmosphere itself will be such as the time that Jesus lived, with people in biblical costumes as well as special sets. The entrance to the market is a large wooden structure made by Marty Games and his Waldron Scout Troop.

Hillsdale First Presbyterian Church is located at 31 North St., and it is advised to use the South Manning Street entrance, which has a handicap accessible ramp. Lunch is served 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
