Jessica Chastain Buys Upper West Side Townhouse for $8.875 Million

Jessica Chastain is expanding her real estate holdings with the recent purchase of an elegant townhouse located on a leafy block of New York City’s Upper West Side. In the deal, first reported by The Wall Street Journal, Chastain paid $8.875 million for the roughly 6,600-square-foot, seven-bedroom home, which is considerably lower than the most recent asking price of $11.5 million. According to StreetEasy, the unit had been on and off the market since 2017.

The charming brownstone boasts a total of five stories, with an elevator to shuttle residents between floors. The parlor level features original wood paneling, an original wood-burning fireplace, and ceilings with intricate moldings. A large, light-filled living room occupies the back of the building and overlooks a private backyard garden. Elsewhere in the home, on the top floor, is a unique Japanese-inspired studio with rice-paper doors and a hot tub with undoubtedly stellar views, given the building’s close proximity to Central Park.

In addition to her newly purchased Upper West Side townhouse, Chastain and her husband, fashion executive Gian Luca Passi de Preposulo, also own a stunning 19th-century apartment located on West 57th street, close to Central Park. The Help actress bought the dwelling in the winter of 2015 and restored the unit to its original “warm and cozy glory” shortly afterward with the help of designers Jesse Carrier and Mara Miller. “Soul retrieval was the real transformation here,” Chastain told AD in 2017, referring to the home’s celeb-pedigreed past.

West Side Story composer Leonard Bernstein, cabaret legend Bobby Short, TV star Larry Storch, and actresses Lynn Redgrave and Vera Miles are among the unit’s past owners. Chastain bought the dwelling from composer Adam Guettel, whose 1999 record Myths and Hymns had a special place in the Molly’s Game star’s heart. “As soon as I found out it was him, I felt like it was meant to be,” she said. That unit spans approximately 3,200 square feet and includes four bedrooms and three-and-a-half bathrooms. Noteworthy features include six wood-burning fireplaces, in-bedroom bathtubs modeled after London’s Dean Street Townhouse, and silk wall coverings in several of the unit’s many rooms.
