Jessica Simpson said she decided to get sober after realizing she was too intoxicated to dress her kids into their Halloween costumes.

The 37-year-old spoke candidly in her new tell-all memoir "Open Book," excerpts of which were provided exclusively to People, about the moment she finally came to terms with her alcohol addiction.

"It was 7:30 in the morning and I'd already had a drink," Simpson wrote of Halloween 2017.

Later on that day, during preparations for her Halloween party, she said she "zoned out" as her team tried to stick a grey beard on her face for her Willie Nelson costume.

And when it came to dressing her own children, she said she was too drunk by that stage to help out.

"I was terrified of letting them see me in that shape. I am ashamed to say that I don't know who got them into their costumes that night," Simpson said.

Simpson said the next day she slept in after taking an Ambien to help her sleep. She also hid from her family, as she was too "afraid to see them, afraid I had failed them."

After realizing she had hit rock bottom, she called her close circle of friends to come over and help. People reports that using a team of doctors and therapists, Simpson has been sober ever since that day.

"There's no better gift I can give my kids, there's no better gift I can give my husband. More importantly, there's no better gift I can give myself," Simpson wrote.

Simpson said she wrote her soon to be released memoir within just a few weeks of being sober.
