Jets are road underdogs for Week 1 matchup with Panthers

Las Vegas is not too confident that Robert Saleh’s tenure as Jets head coach will begin on a high note when New York travels to Carolina to take on the Panthers and old friend Sam Darnold in Week 1.

According to BetMGM, the Jets are 4.5-point underdogs on the road against the Panthers. Carolina went just 5-11 last season, but profile as an improved team entering Matt Rhule’s second year as head coach. With a new quarterback in Darnold under center and Christian McCaffery returning after an injury-riddled 2020 season, the Panthers are hoping to reverse their fortunes, beginning with their season opener against New York.

The Jets and Panthers last met in 2017 at MetLife Stadium. Carolina ultimately left the Garden State with a 35-27 win, as Cam Newton and Jonathan Stewart accounted for one rushing touchdown each and Kaelin Clay returned a punt 60 yards for a score.

New York is 3-4 all-time against the Panthers.
