Jets vs. Patriots Week 7 recap: Everything we know

The Jets returned from their bye with their most pathetic performance of the season.

With two weeks to prepare for a rematch with the Patriots, Robert Saleh’s squad lost, 54-13. Another lifeless start, uncreative offense, porous defense, and an injury to Zach Wilson doomed New York early on. Things only regressed from there.

The Jets are now 1-5 and have lost 12 straight games to the Patriots. Here’s a look a what happened in their latest, listless defeat.

Final Score: Patriots 54, Jets 13

Wilson’s Knee: Wilson exited early in the second quarter with a knee injury after two big (and flagless) hits on the rookie quarterback. He was ruled questionable to return at the time of departure but was downgraded to out after halftime. Wilson’s health will be something to keep an eye on in the days ahead.

White’s Debut: With Wilson hurt, backup Mike White made his NFL debut and threw his first career touchdown (on a poor throw that Corey Davis corraled). White looked out of place, going 20-32 for 202 yards and two interceptions in relief. The Jets better hope that Wilson doesn’t miss much time.

Brutal Beginnings: The Jets faceplanted out of the gate, allowing two touchdowns — including one on a trick play — while adding a three and out and a missed field goal in the first quarter. Robert Saleh spent the off week diagnosing the reasons for New York’s sluggish starts, but the subtle changes he made did no good. New York remains scoreless in the first quarter this season, while opponents have put up 44 points in the first 15 minutes of action. The Jets have been outscored 106-20 in the first half.

Dominant Damien: A lot of Patriots impressed on offense in Week 7, but Damien Harris ran all over the Jets. The running back eclipsed 100 yards on the ground on just 14 carries while adding two touchdowns. Mac Jones, meanwhile, threw for 300 yards for the first time in his career while adding two touchdowns.

WR Elijah Moore: Moore didn’t post eye-popping numbers, but he did score his first career touchdown on a crafty 19-yard run. The part that stands out here is that it took Mike LaFleur seven weeks to realize that putting the ball in one of his most talented player’s hands is a recipe for success. Even still, Moore only totaled two touches — though he did have six targets — for 32 yards on the day. Sunday was proof that that number needs to increase moving forward.

WR Corey Davis: Davis made an excellent grab on that aforementioned touchdown pass from White. He added three more receptions for 47 yards.

LB Del’Shawn Phillips: Phillips did a nice job filling up the stat sheet Sunday, recording seven tackles, two TFL and New York’s only sack of the game.

The Jets will finally return to MetLife Stadium in Week 8 when they host Joe Burrow and the Bengals.

That game is set for Sunday, Oct. 31 at 1 p.m. It will be New York’s first home game since Week 4. The Jets picked up their only win of the season that Sunday. Now they’ll try to break back into that column in familiar confines.
