Jewelry designer Kendra Scott gets another job title: University of Texas professor
Kendra Scott has another job title.
The popular jewelry designer will take her business expertise to a University of Texas classroom to teach the course “Women in Entrepreneurship.”
The class is designed to give students “hands-on, tangible tools to equip and empower female entrepreneurs” that “will immerse students in the core tenets of creating a new business, will expose the obstacles and challenges women face in contemporary society and will offer strategies to overcome them,” according to a news release.
“I’m honored to join the university as a professor of practice, and am so excited for the opportunity to work directly with this next generation of courageous leaders,” Scott said in a news release.
This isn’t Scott’s first partnership with the university in Austin. Last year, she joined faculty to create the Kendra Scott Women’s Entrepreneurial Leadership Institute.
In 2002, Scott started her company with $500 and a spare bedroom after the birth of her first son, officials say. Now it’s grown into a “billion-dollar brand” with 2,000 employees, 100 stores and online retail.
The class was originally slated to be taught at the Kendra Scott headquarters in Austin, but it’s moving online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Scott will co-teach the class with Jan Ryan, a professor of practice and executive director of the Center for Creative Entrepreneurship.
“Uniquely, this class will allow us to offer a ‘live’ case study of one of the most innovative brands in retail today,” Ryan said in a news release. “We want students in this class to walk away with the tools they need to feel empowered to take control of their careers.”
