NEW CONCORD − John Glenn's lacrosse program is entering its fourth season as a varsity sport in the East Muskingum School district, having been approved by the Board of Education to start during the 2020 season.

But the COVID pandemic postponed the actually on the field start for lacrosse until the following season in 2021.

Now, the first Muskie lacrosse player in school history has earned a scholarship to continue both his academic and lacrosse careers at the collegiate level.

Senior Ethan Haney, the son of Todd and Marcie Haney, recently signed his Letter of Intent to attend the Indiana Institute of Technology after graduation from John Glenn. Indiana Tech is a NAIA powerhouse and played in the National Championship game in 2022.

"I feel honored and blessed for the opportunity of receiving an academic and athletic scholarship to play the sport of lacrosse and to continue my education to become an engineer," Haney explained. "I feel with this honor does come a responsibility to set an example for my team and the youth lacrosse players of the NCLC club."

"I have an immense sense of pride of being the first Muskie lacrosse player to earn a scholarship, but I'm even more thankful for the opportunity of being a part of the first lacrosse team at John Glenn," Haney said. "Honestly, I really didn’t expect this amount of success from myself and my team, But with hard work and because of such a tight knit relationship between the players of our team, we have made a name for John Glenn High School lacrosse."

John Glenn finished that first season of competition during the 2021 season, with a record of 3-16. But in year number two, John Glenn made a tremendous improvement by posting a 13-6 mark.

Haney received All Region Honorable Mention recognition in 2021 then last year, Haney received Second Team All Region Honors after collecting 67 goals, the 11th most in the state in 2022.

Haney's career numbers include 129 career goals, including one game with 9, which is fourth most in state history, and 47 assists.

"For a university of Indiana Tech's level to recruit and sign Ethan is a complete recognition of Ethan's abilities," John Glenn head lacrosse coach Bob Williams offered. "Ethan has been a team captain for the last two seasons and is a great leader on and off the field.

"When we started lacrosse in New Concord in 2016, having one of our players recruited to play for college certainly wasn't something we thought about," Williams added. "Ethan started playing lacrosse in the 7th grade.  And he has absolutely fell in love with the sport. Given that our 2020 season was cancelled due to COVID, Ethan has been playing lacrosse for four years. John Glenn lacrosse is proud of Ethan, both as a lacrosse player and young man with an incredibly bright future."

Haney had several choices when it came time to decide on his future home at the collegiate level, receiving offers from Mount Vernon Nazarene University, Trine University, Marietta College, Mount Union University, and Otterbein University.

"I received offers to play at several schools, but Indiana Tech was the best fit for me both academically and athletically," Haney explained. "Their engineering program is top notch and a new renovation of over $20 million has just been completed specifically on the engineering facilities. Also, their lacrosse program is top notch and has played for the National Championship the last two years and been the National Championship Runner Up.

"During my college visits with the team, I really got to know their players and coaching staff, and they were not only talented but very welcoming toward me and I felt comfortable," Haney stated. "Coach Bryan Seaman has built a wonderful program, that I am excited to be a part of next year."

Despite the sport of lacrosse being relatively new to the Guernsey County area, for Haney it quickly became his sport of choice.

"Lacrosse is my favorite sport because of the fast pace, high intensity and physical contact of the game, and it truly takes a team effort to win," Haney offered. "I may play attack and that makes me responsible for scoring goals and making assists, but that would be impossible without my team.

"Also, playing with my brother Evan, who is also on the attack line, was one of my highlights of last season and will be as we continue as teammates this year," Haney continued. "Hopefully, lacrosse will continue to give many opportunities to John Glenn students, who will start out like we did with enjoying the sport of lacrosse with teammates that are also your friends."

Haney has also designed a specific game plan for his academic goals upon attending Indiana Tech.

"I will graduate from high school with an Associates Degree in Electro-Mechanical Engineering from Zane State, as I am enrolled in their CCP program," Haney said. "I plan to continue towards by Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering at Indiana Tech.

"I may even be able to work towards a Master’s Degree during my time at Indiana Tech since I have some college credit from Zane State prior to starting," Haney continued. "Manufacturing and research and design in engineering peak my interest at this time, but I'm looking forward to the next four years to figure that out."
