Jim Jordan would cause catastrophe as House speaker. Would that break America's MAGA fever?

7/18/19 2:38:37 PM -- Washington, DC, U.S.A -- Rep. Jim Jordan, R-OH,

Ranking Member, Committee on Oversight and Reform comments during Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Kevin K. McAleenan testimony before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Oversight and Reform. The committee scheduled the hearing to "examine the Trump Administration’s child separation policy, the treatment of immigrants detained in U.S. government facilities, and related issues."

Electing Jim Jordan speaker would be a catastrophe for America

With Trump’s endorsement, I am assuming Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, will win.

That is a catastrophe for America. There is no worse human being to have a leadership position than Jim Jordan.

Terrible for policy — Ukraine, the economy, the planet and justice for those not like him.

More: Jim Jordan is Donald Trump’s pick to be speaker. Why would he ever want that hard job?

It would be terrible for "process" — the end of civility and finding a problem-solving path forward as well as strong democratic institutions.

That catastrophe ultimately means one of two things: either all hope is lost or the resulting turmoil breaks the MAGA fever before it is too late.

Because of our constitutional structural vulnerabilities, I fear the worst.

Never smoke pot

There is plenty of media interest on Issue 1, but what about Issue 2?

Legalizing cannabis?

When my son was 12 years old, we noticed a change in his behavior. We chalked it up to “teen hormones.”

Turns out he was given cannabis by the father of a school friend. He had started smoking pot. Fast-forward to high school. My son had two best friends.

State Issue 2: What to know about Ohio's recreational marijuana legalization ballot issue

Nice kids: artistic and musical, but despite being smart they were all unmotivated to learn in school and often ended up in the principal’s office.

Where are these three boys today: now age 30 and older?

The first got into serious drugs. He has long since passed away.

The second uses pot daily. He works at a fast-food restaurant and lives at home.

My son struggled with mental health issues. He overcame them with family help and counseling.

He is now able to support his family and give good advice to his 12-year-old son: Never smoke pot. Do not go down that road!

I encourage all readers to consider Issue 2 with the seriousness it deserves.

My son lives in Colorado Springs, where cannabis is legal, and wants to move back to Ohio. This issue is about protecting our kids and keeping Ohio a safe and pleasant place to live in.

Vote "no" on Issue 2.

Women don't need their protection

"Protect Women Ohio"? Who are they, the American version of the Taliban? American women can fully protect themselves and don't need any help from the great white fathers in Columbus.

If Issue 1 fails, then every unwanted child thereafter should be laid on the doorsteps of these people.

Stop the scare tactics

Re "Medical students will flee the state if Issue 1 fails," Oct. 4: Desperate to get a bill passed? Pull out all the stops and try the scare tactics. There is no proof medical students will flee the state of Issue 1 fails. In 2015 celebrities said they would move out of the United States if Donald Trump were elected president.

How many left the United States? Don’t fall for the scare tactics.

Despite over one in five US households speaking a language other than English at home, misconceptions and myths about bilingualism persist. One such misconception is that bilingualism causes language delays in young children. Parents should be encouraged to communicate in their native language, rather than speaking only English to their child, without fear of causing a language delay. However, language delays can occur in bilingual children just as in any child, so they need proper assessment if their parents or teachers have concerns. Child health care providers should be proficient in assessing normal language development and identifying abnormal language development in a bilingual child.
