Jimmies can't keep up in 6-1 loss at Minot State

Oct. 2—MINOT — The University of Jamestown has played Minot State University more than any other opponent in program history. The latest edition of the rivalry was a chippy affair with the teams combining for 121 penalty minutes in a 6-1 Beavers win on Saturday, Oct. 1, at Minot's Maysa Arena.

The Beavers (2-0) opened the scoring five and a half minutes into the game when Kole Christensson got called for the slash. With 1:25 remaining on the power play, the Beavers' Reid Arnold went tape to twine to put his team up 1-0. The score would stay that way until there was 9:28 to go in the first period when Sheldin Howard sniped one stick side past Jimmies (0-2) goalie Brandon Weare to push the lead out to 2-0. Three minutes after the goal, the hatred that the two teams share for one another came to the surface as the Jimmies' Justin Dumont and the Beavers' Landyn Cochrane both got called for unsportsmanlike conduct penalties and given 10 minute major penalties. The Beavers would add another one in the period to go into the break up 3-0.

After the Beavers added two more in the second, to take a 5-0 lead into the third period, the fireworks really started. The Beavers put the game away when Davis Sheldon slotted it home with 17:30 to go in the game making it 6-0. The Jimmies would get one back with 12:33 to go in the game when Jordan Baranesky sniped one past Beavers goalie Jake Anthony to cut the deficit to 6-1. With 9:17 to go in the period, both teams came together taking exception to some booming hits and the gloves were dropped resulting in eight different penalties with the Jimmies' Brad Fortin and Jordan Popoff and the Beavers' Connor Navrot and Sheldon all got two-minute unsportsmanlike conduct penalties and 10-minute game misconducts.

The game would stay relatively clean until there was a minute left to go in the game when Baranesky took three strides and plastered a Beaver into the boards. As a result, the teams came together again and the Beavers' Eric Krywy took exception to the hit, pummeling a Jimmie. Once the referees regained order, they called Krywy for a two-minute roughing penalty and a 10-minute fighting disqualification penalty. They also called Baranesky for a five-minute major for checking from behind and a 10-minute game misconduct. They also sent the Jimmies' Mario DeCapite to the showers early on a two-minute roughing call.

The Jimmies are back in action at 6:15 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7, when they go to Illinois State.
