Jimmies take down Waldorf 7-1 behind big third period

Oct. 16—JAMESTOWN — On the second day of a series against Waldorf University, the University of Jamestown exploded in the third period to get a 7-1 win on Saturday, Oct. 15, at John L. Wilson Arena.

"Give Waldorf credit I think they came out hard," Jimmies head coach Dean Stork said. "They needed to respond and give us a punch in the mouth and they did in the first period. So I think we came in here after that first period and knew, we better get going here, we can't sit around and wait. We had a pretty good talk during intermission time, enough's enough, it's time to squash hope. So we went out there in the second and put a little bit of hope in us and squashed them a little bit and came out in the third period, just as a good solid group effort by everybody offensively."

The Jimmies (4-2, 4-0) took an early 2-0 lead in the second period thanks to goals from Mario Decapite and Logan Berggren. The Jimmies pushed their lead out further when Greg Susinski took a wrist shot that rang the post and went in to make it 3-0 with 3:18 to go in the second period.

The Jimmies stretched the lead out further just over two minutes into the third period when Jordan Baranesky scored to make it 4-0. The Jimmies weren't done though as Brad Fortin intercepted a puck and took one stride and put it in stick side to make it 5-0 with 8:08 to go in the game. The Jimmies' Brad Fortin got his second of the day with 7:11 to go in the game to make it 6-0. The Jimmies put the game on ice, with a wrist shot from Jordon Kromm to make it 7-0 with 3:58 to go in the game. The Warriors (1-5-1, 1 — 2-1) got one back when Morgan Sweeney got in on a breakaway and deked past Jimmies goalie Jaysen MacLean to make it 7-1 with 3:05 to go in the game.

In the win, Susinski had one goal and three assists for four points.

"Making sure I wasn't as bad as last night to be honest," Susinski said. "I have a Friday night ritual that I do with our goalies so every time I do that I seem to fire up on Saturday night. We usually hang out and we talk about Friday night and I tell them a bunch of things I'm gonna do the next night and usually it works out."

One of the goalies that takes part in that ritual is MacLean who made 36 saves on 37 shots.

"I don't think you're ever calm in the net because it can change at any time," MacLean said. "I mean you saw what happened at the end there, they get one lucky bounce, they score a goal, you never know when that's gonna happen in a game."

The Jimmies are back in action at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 28, when they host Minot State.
