Jimmies fall 4-3 in chippy overtime loss to Minot State

Oct. 15—JAMESTOWN — The University of Jamestown fought back from two different deficits but could not pull ahead of Minot State University in a 4-3 overtime loss on Friday, Oct. 15, at John L. Wilson Arena.

The Beavers struck first when Alisha O'Hara took a shot that found its way to Sydney Spicer on the short side to make it 1-0 with 11:15 to go in the opening period. The Beavers added another one with 1:16 to go in the period when Aspen Cooper took a shot from the point that found it's way through traffic and past Jimmies goalie Makenzie Gibson to make it 2-0.

The Jimmies (1-3, 1-3) cut into the lead in the second period when Emma Strouse took a shot that went right through the Beavers' goalie Jordan Ivanco's five-hole to make it 2-1 with 17:47 to go in the second period. The Jimmies would tie the game up late in the period when Bethany Wielgosh scored to make it a 2-2 game.

"Kind of had to go in there and be bad cop for a little bit," Jimmies head coach Amber Schaack said. "But basically, told them 'hey, we need to go back to playing our hockey, playing simple hockey.' We're not to a point where we can be a team that's gonna be fancy, we're not individuals, so just going back to playing team hockey and digging ourselves out of it."

The Beavers (2-1, 2-1) retook the lead midway through the third period when Anna German threw one towards the net where it was poked home by Riley Ball to make it 3-2 with 13:08 to go in the game. The Jimmies tied the game up again when Jayden Baker took a wrist shot that deflected off Ivanco and in to tie the game up at three with just under eight minutes to go.

The Beavers would go on the power play with 1:15 to go in overtime and they made the Jimmies pay as Ensley Fendeldet scored to give her team a 4-3 win. Before the overtime winner, the Beavers called a timeout to set up a faceoff play, allowing Schaack to give her team some advice and strategy. Schaack said she was telling her team to try to work to win the faceoff.

The two teams face off again at 3:45 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15, at Minot State's Maysa Arena.
