Jimmies hurt by poor third period in 7-1 loss at Midland
Sep. 25—FREMONT, Neb. — The University of Jamestown's growing pains continued as they went into the final period against Midland University with a chance to get their first win in program history. The Jimmies gave up four goals in the third period to turn a 3-1 deficit into a 7-1 loss on Sunday, Sept. 25, at the Sidner Ice Arena.
Jimmies head coach Amber Schaack said she is looking for her team to continue to grow into the ability to play at a high level for all three periods.
"Honestly, that's going to come with time and experience," Jimmies head coach Amber Schaack said. "It's a lot more hockey than most of them are used to playing, games are a little bit longer, things like that. That's just going to come down to like I said, experience is going to take a little bit of time to put everything together but the first two periods were great on our end. We held them there, we gave ourselves a chance, which is what we needed to do there. But the flood gates opened there in the third period, but we'll talk about it."
The Warriors (2-0) went on the power play late in the first period and Ally Rakowski made the Jimmies pay by scoring to make it 1-0. The Warriors added on with just under 17 minutes to go in the second period when Rakowski stepped right into the middle and sniped one past Jimmies (0-2) goalie Makenzie Gibson to make it 2-0. Around 40 seconds later, the Jimmies went on the power play and Gaby Schroeder took a shot from the point that found its way to Emma Strouse in front to clean up the rebound and cut the deficit to 2-1 with 14:30 to go in the second period.
The Jimmies now have scored two goals in program history with both coming on the power play.
"We'll have to definitely work on picking up pucks in front of the net, finding a way to get them in the back of the net," Schaack said. "But we had our opportunities there in the first and second period, we came out strong, we just need to get more pucks on net and crash the net a little bit harder."
After the Warriors would stretch the lead back out to 3-1, they would put the game away when they went on the power play and Keagan Sherer took a shot from the top of the zone that was spilled into the crease where Jenna Grosdidier cleaned up the loose puck to make it 4-1.
The Jimmies are back in action at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 9, when they host Maryville University-St.Louis.
