Jimmies keep winning streak going with 68-48 win over Mount Marty

Jan. 25—JAMESTOWN — After the Mount Marty Lancers struggled shooting the ball to start the game, the University of Jamestown pulled away in a 68-48 win on Wednesday, Jan. 25, at Harold Newman Arena.

The Jimmies (16-5, 11-4) opened the game up on a 12-2 run, helped by the Lancers (6-16, 3-13) starting 0-for-11 from the field before the Lancers hit their first basket on a layup from Sidney Thue with 1:30 to go in the first quarter. The Jimmies outscored the Lancers 16-6 in the opening quarter and held everybody but Thue off the scoreboard. In total the Lancers shot 2-for-16 in the first quarter.

Despite hitting a three early in the second quarter, the Lancers still struggled shooting the ball in the second quarter, finishing 3-for-9 from the field and turning it over 10 times in the first half. The Jimmies had nine turnovers in the first half but scored 12 points off the Lancers' turnovers whereas the Loboes only scored two points off the Jimmies' turnovers. The first half saw the season debut of guard Madelyn Schmidt who played around four minutes in the first half, taking one shot in the process.

"It's something you're working towards since you get the surgery and it's something I've been anticipating and I'm just glad the opportunity came," Schmidt said. "My teammates were great, lifting me up and having all the confidence in the world. It felt really good. It was good to be back out there, out with the girls. I'm pretty excited. Obviously, there's still work to be done but just getting back in the flow of things is good."

The third quarter saw the Jimmies stretch the lead out and go further down their bench as with 5:45 to go in the quarter, Sarah Lenz splashed a three in front of her bench to push the lead out to 46-20. Through three quarters, the Lancers only had seven players score.

Midway through the fourth quarter, the Jimmies' Megan Oswald hit a bucket and converted the and-one to push the lead out to 67-45. That was three of only nine points that the Jimmies scored in the fourth as they were outscored 21-9.

The Jimmies showed off their scoring depth in the win as 12 different players scored at least two points, with the leading scorer being Lenz with 10 points.

"It's good because all of our players are working on their individual roles for our team," Sankey said. "So, even when our rotations change because we have a big lead, our players as we're on the court in different lineups. For example, we're looking at a double big lineup with Megan Oswald and Hannah Hagel out there, is that something we could be working on, something we should be working on in practice. We're still out there focused on certain things we want and our players know what their goal is."

The Jimmies are back in action at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28, when they host Northwestern.

"I believe it's just believing in one another, knowing that every game from here on out matters," Jimmies guard Kia Tower said. "We have to come in locked in and leave it all on the court. Whoever works the hardest that night, plays the hardest, that's who's going to win."
