Jimmies men's volleyball lose in four to Park
Jan. 28—The University of Jamestown men's volleyball team pushed their rivals the No. 4 Park University to a fourth set in a 21-25, 25-23, 14-25, 25-27 loss on Jan. 27.
The Jimmies (0-1) had a chance to send it to a fifth set, up 25-24, but a 3-0 stretch from the Pirates (5-0) ended the match.
The Jimmies' Caylor Cox rose up and spiked the ball down to make it 5-3. The Pirates' Gabriel Soares hit an ace to put his team up 12-7, drawing a Jimmies timeout. Out of the timeout, the Jimmies' Korben Phillips slammed a ball down for the kill to make it 12-8. Soares rose up and got the block to make it 19-14, drawing a Jimmies timeout. The Jimmies' Samuel Jackman got up and spiked the ball down to make it 20-16.
Phillips got up and spiked a ball down to put the Jimmies up 12-11 in the second set. Woods spiked a ball cross court to make it 19-16 in favor of the Jimmies. Phillips got another kill to put the Jimmies up 21-18 in the second set. The Jimmies' Derek Owens rose up and slammed the kill down to give the Jimmies the 25-23 win in the second set.
The team's confidence shot up by winning the second set according to head coach Travers Cox.
"It felt great," Cox said. "Guys were pumped, they were excited. At that point, we knew that we could hang with anybody basically because, you kind of know where you're at a little bit ...That second set was awesome, guys felt good. They were playing good, had some nice runs, countered them on things they did. So it felt good."
The Pirates' Felipe Guirau slammed a ball off a Jimmie for the kill to make it 4-2 in the third set. The Pirates' Pablo Llorente put the serve right into the corner to stretch their lead out to 11-4. Owens slammed a ball down to cut the lead to 17-9. The Jimmies' Zach Meyer got the kill to make it 19-11. Soares nailed the ace to give the Pirates the 25-14 third set win.
After a Jimmies block, Fredirich jumped right back up and slammed it down to stretch the Pirates lead to 10-8. Jackman got up over the net and slammed the ball down to cut the Pirates lead to 17-14. Phillips got up over the net and sent a deflected shot into the stands to give the Jimmies the 24-23 lead in the fourth set. Guiraiu bounced a ball off a block and down to give the Pirates the 26-25 fourth set lead, drawing a Jimmies timeout. Out of the timeout, the Jimmies were called for an over the net giving the Pirates the 27-25 fourth set, 3-1 match win.
As this Cox's first season as the Jimmies head coach, this first match of the season taught him and his staff a lot about his team.
"We defintely got somethings to fix," Cox said. "There were a lot of things that I saw that we need to work on. We have to get a lot better in the passing game, that was a tough serving team. I knew they were going to be, setting game has got to be a little bit better, Austin like I said, his first match. He had a decent start, had a great second game, third set got a little rattled, settled down in the fourth set, got his confidence back. There are some things that we are going to fix."
The Jimmies return to the court at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28, when they face Kansas Wesleyan University. The Pirates look to remain undefeated at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 1, when they face William Penn University.
