Jimmies roundup: Women's soccer fly high, men's swoon continues

Sep. 23—HASTINGS, Neb. — After a slow start to the season, the University of Jamestown appeared to be finding its stride heading into its game at Hastings College on Thursday, Sept. 22. The Jimmies kept it going with a 1-0 win over the Broncos at the Lloyd Wilson Field.

The first half was all Broncos (6-1, 1-1) as they got their first shot 11 minutes into the game but it was saved by Tea Pence to keep it scoreless. The Broncos' Dekotah Schubert kept her big first half going with another shot three minutes later but it was saved by Pence. The Jimmies (4-4-1, 3-0) got one of their two shots in the first half approximately two minutes later when Emersen Kimball took a shot that was saved by the goalie Sofie Jackson-Pederson. The Jimmies second shot came at the end of the first half as Kamryn Fiscus sent a shot towards the goal but it was saved by Jackson-Pederson.

The Jimmies got their closest chance to that point when Miarosa Gyllenswan had her shot ring the post in the 68th minute. The Jimmies won a corner in the 73rd minute and it was taken by Amber Somera who sent it in to the box where it was mishandled by Jackson-Pederson and spilled to the waiting Gyllenswan who slotted it home to give the Jimmies the 1-0 lead. The Broncos kept pushing but the Jimmies defense was up to the task as two late shots were saved by Pence.

The Jimmies are back in action at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24, when they go to Doane University.

HASTINGS, NEB — The Jimmies scoring woes would continue in their match against the Broncos. The Jimmies were held to one shot on goal in a 5-1 loss to the Broncos on Thursday, Sept. 22, at Hastings College. The Jimmies have scored one goal or less for the fifth consecutive game.

The Broncos (4-1, 1-0) were on the front foot from the start of the men's game as well as they took their first shot of the night four and a half minutes into the game but it was saved by Jimmies (1-6-1, 0-2-1) goalie Matt English. The Broncos would get in on goal where David Painter made it 1-0. Around 10 minutes later, the Broncos would go down in the box and the ref would point to the spot. The Broncos' Tyler Mase calmly doubled his team's lead to 2-0.

The Broncos added on in the 48th minute when Kai Knuchel made it 3-0. The score would stay that way until the 73rd minute when Paul Obrusnik took two dribbles from just outside the box and sent a missile into the upper 90 to make it 4-0.

The Broncos added an insurance marker in the 87th minute when Painter scored his second of the night to make it 5-0.

The Jimmies avoided the shutout when they drew a pen of their own with six seconds to go in the match and Jon Torres stepped up and sent the goalie going the wrong way to get the Jimmies on the board and make it 5-1.

The Jimmies return to the field at 3:15 p.m. on Sept. 24, when they go to Doane.
