Jimmies struggle to get going offensively in 3-0 loss to Oregon Tech
Sep. 3—PENDELTON, Or. — The University of Jamestown had 11 shots but only one of those was on the net and it cost them against the Oregon Institute of Technology Owls. The Owls had five shots on goal and beat the Jimmies 3-0 on Friday, Sept. 2, in a game that was originally scheduled to take place one hour south in La Grande, Oregon. However, the game was moved due to nearby wildfires on the Oregon-California border.
"I think we worried about things we couldn't control too much," Jimmies head coach Connor Campbell said. "We anticipated playing on turf and we were fortunate to have a backup field to play on due to the nearby fire. Both teams played on the same field and dealt with the same situations, they just adjusted better than we did."
The Owls were on the front foot almost immediately as in the seventh minute, Cade O'Neill took a shot that went wide before the Owls blocked a Ben Sletto shot on the other end. The Jimmies looked to break through in the 12th minute when Jacob Holtz' shot clacked off the post before the follow up attempt from Austin Shafer sailed wide of the net. The Owls would break through in the 43rd minute when DeShone Myles took a pass from Ryan Pearson and scored to make it 1-0. The shot from Myles was the Owls' ninth shot of the first half.
Campbell said he felt the Myles goal was only a matter of time as the Owls pinned the Jimmies in their own side of the field.
"We played in our own end for too long in the first half and gave them too many opportunities," Campbell said. "It was only a matter of time with the amount of possibilities we were giving up."
It didn't take very long for the Owls to double their lead as in the 52nd minute, the Owls drew a foul, and John Sarna made the Jimmies pay by slotting one home to make it 2-0. The Jimmies got their first shot of the second half in the 66th minute when Wade McWhorter took a shot that rang the post keeping the score right where it was. The Owls added on in the 71st minute when Andrew Pasang scored to make it 3-0.
The Jimmies won a corner in the 89th minute and Jean Arreguin's ball was played in to Miguel Bazaldua who sent the shot over the net.
After starting sophomore goalie Matt English in net for the first two games, Campbell gave freshman Jort Ruijssenars his first career start. In the loss, Ruijssenars made two saves on five shots.
The Jimmies return to the field at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 4, when they face the College of Idaho.
