Jimmies suffer loses to Northwestern, Dickinson in Jimmie Tri-Dual

Jan. 13—JAMESTOWN — The University of Jamestown hosted Northwestern University (Iowa) and Dickinson State University in a tri-dual on Friday, Jan. 13, at Harold Newman Arena. The Jimmies started the day with a 19-18 loss to the Red Raiders before losing 28-12 to the Blue Hawks.

The first match of the day saw the Jimmies' Elijah Barajas get a major decision win over the Red Raiders' Case Cauthron. The Red Raiders followed that up with two wins in a row to take a 9-4 lead. The 149-pound weight class followed with the Jimmies' Tommy Beringer getting a major decision win over the Red Raiders' Noah Parmelee to cut the deficit to 9-8.

The Jimmies took the lead in the next match when Cutter Jones got a 6-1 decision win over the Red Raiders' Brody Hoversten to push the Jimmies in front 11-9. The Jimmies got another win to stretch the lead out to 15-9 before the Red Raiders won three matches in a row to take a 19-11 lead.

The Jimmies finished the first meet on a high note as Ian Howell got a 3-1 decision win over the Red Raiders' Lincoln Siebert to cut the deficit to 19-15.

"The big match there was we were winning (the 141-pound match) and then we got pinned," Jimmies head coach Jim Zalesky said. ".. Then Jake (Rau) at (197-pounds) hit his head there and that's why he didn't wrestle the last match. So that was a big match too because I think he could've won that match."

The Jimmies' Elijah Barajas could not keep his big day going in the second meet as he lost his first match to the Blue Hawks' Jose Gonzalez, starting a three-match winning streak for the Blue Hawks. The run was ended by Beringer who got a decision win over the Blue Hawks' Caleb Nielsen to cut the deficit to 13-3. The Blue Hawks responded with another three-match winning streak to put the meet away at 22-3.

The streak was ended when the Jimmies' Diante Taylor got a dominant 14-8 decision win over the Blue Hawks' Sam Adams.

The Jimmies are back in action at 12 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 20, when they take part in the Missouri Valley Invite.

"We got a tournament next week, it's more of an individual," Zalesky said. "So, we'll see as individuals where we're at. We're going to be hurting because at (165-pounds) and (157-pounds) we had to forfeit. So, that's going to be hard for us to win some duels. I think now it's time to start thinking individually, what you got to do, what guys gotta do. So, it's more about individual performance than team performance."
