Jimmies get wins over Tennessee Southern, Saint Mary

Sep. 2—NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D. — The University of Jamestown continues to traverse the country to play matches this time going to North Sioux City, South Dakota to face Tennessee Southern. The Jimmies continued their hot start to the season by sweeping the Firehawks (25-14, 25-18, 25-17) on Friday, Sept. 2, at the United Sports Academy.

The Jimmies got out to a 10-6 lead in the first set before the Firehawks went on a run to cut the lead to 13-12 thanks to back-to-back kills from Brianna Turner. After a Firehawks service error pushed the Jimmies' lead out to 14-12, the Jimmies went on a 5-1 run to take a 19-13 lead. The run was ended by a Turner kill to make it 19-14 before the Jimmies put the clamps down going on a 6-0 run to win the first set 25-14.

The Firehawks (3-6) opened the second set with a 3-1 run before the Jimmies responded to take a 15-7 lead. The Firehawks would cut into the deficit at 15-9 before a 3-0 run for the Jimmies made it 18-9. The Jimmies stretched the lead out to 19-12 before the Firehawks went on a 5-3 run to cut the deficit to 22-17. The Jimmies closed the set on a 3-1 run with three Firehawks errors finishing the set off for the Jimmies at 25-18.

The Jimmies sprinted out of the gate in the third set taking an 8-2 lead and the Firehawks were never able to fully get back into it. The Jimmies looked to be holding the Firehawks to single digits in the last set up 22-9 but a 7-0 run cut the deficit to 22-16. The Jimmies were able to rebound and close the match out on a Peyton Wilson kill to make it 25-17.

In the second match of the day, the Jimmies had their backs against the wall down two sets to one but fought back to get a five sets win over the Saint Mary University Spires (23-25, 25-19, 18-5, 25-16, 15-7).

The Spires (5-2) jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the first set before the Jimmies cut into the lead at 6-4. The first set would continue to be back and forth with the Spires taking a 17-15 lead before the Jimmies (9-1) went on a 3-0 run to take an 18-17 lead. The Spires responded with a 5-2 run to take a 22-20 lead. The Spires put the set away thanks to a kill from Madison Folsom to make it 25-23.

The Jimmies responded to the set loss with a 7-3 run to open the second set. The Jimmies continued to play well with an Anna Holen kill making it 14-6 before the Spires cut into the lead and made it 17-15. The Spires would continue to fight back when Michelle Dvorak got a kill to cut the deficit to 19-18. The Jimmies' Ellie Holen got three aces in a row to stretch the Jimmies' lead back out to 24-18 before a Darienne Johnson kill sent the match to the third set tied at one set apiece.

Early in the third set, the Spires took a 4-3 lead before the Jimmies' Lexi Olson took over and went on a 3-0 run by herself to push the Jimmies out in front 6-4. The Jimmies stretched the lead out to 10-6 before the Spires called a timeout and responded to tie the set up at 12. After the stoppage, the Spires went on a 5-3 run to take a 17-15 lead. The Jimmies were never able to get back in the set as the Jimmies only managed to cut the deficit to 24-18 before the Spires finished it off with a 25-18 third set win.

The fourth set continued the Jimmies' hot starts as they got off to a 7-3 start before the Spires fought back to make it 7-5. The set would not be tight for long though as the Jimmies exploded for a 10-4 run to take a 17-9 lead. The Spires would attempt to fight back but it would be too little too late as the Jimmies won the fourth set 25-16.

The Jimmies put the fifth set away early taking an 9-3 lead. From there the Jimmies went on a 7-2 run to take a 14-5 lead before the Spires cut into the lead making it 14-7. A Spires service error gave the Jimmies a 15-7 fifth set win.

The Jimmies are back in action at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3, when they face Rocky Mountain College.
